Associate Paster, Father Jerry Hechenberger

FATHER PAUL’S ONE CENT WORTH:

This weekend we celebrate the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. A theme which is very prevalent in this weekend’s readings is the theme of God’s love for His people. That theme especially comes through in today’s second reading. We are reminded that as we have been blessed with our individual gifts (the theme of our second reading two weekends ago) which are to be used for the good of the whole body, or community (the theme of last weekend’s second reading), so we are to

Catholic Schools Week begins with our 10:30 Mass this Sunday. There will be an Open House after Mass until 1:30 p.m. at the school. A variety of special activities are scheduled for our school this week. Among these are Vocation talks given by Sisters from the Adorers of the Blood of Christ, Father Jerry, and me. A Habitat for Humanity speaker will also visit our school this week. There will be an Open House for Kindergarten on Wednesday, February 3, at 7:00 p.m. Next week there will be an Open House on Tuesday, February 9, for 3-year-olds at 6:00 p.m. and for 4-year-olds at 7:00 p.m.

On Tuesday of this week the Church celebrates the Presentation of the Lord. This feast commemorates Jesus being presented in the temple 40 days after His birth. As we are reminded on this day that Jesus came to be a light for all nations, we bless the candles which will illumine our church during the coming year. On Wednesday of this week the Church celebrates the feast of St. Blaise. St. Blaise was the bishop of Sebaste in Armenia in the fourth century. Before dying as a martyr, he healed a boy who was choking. Since the eighth century, St. Blaise has been venerated as the patron saint for those who suffer from diseases of the throat. Our throats are blessed either on the actual feast of St. Blaise or on a day close to his feast day, as we seek St. Blaise’s intercession for protection from diseases of the throat and other illnesses. We will have the St. Blaise blessing of throats at our school Mass this Tuesday and at the end of our Masses next weekend (February 6 and 7).

This week each of the parishes in our partnership has celebrated the funeral of a parish member. On Monday St. Pancratius had the funeral of Arkell Vahlkamp, on Saturday St. Liborius had the funeral of Isabella Anne Buss, and also on Saturday Holy Childhood had the funeral of Kevin Gordon. On Monday there will be a funeral service for a former member of Holy Childhood, Leilana Cameron-Kelly, at Moll Funeral Home. We offer our prayers for all who have died and for their loved ones.

Ella Rose Riesenberger, the daughter of Brandon and Tiffany Riesenberger, and Lydia Michelle Baumgartner, the daughter of Charles and Tiffany Baumgartner, will be baptized after the 10:30 Mass this Sunday.

There will be a make-up Blood Drive on Saturday, February 6, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Year of Mercy

Glad tidings.  Good News!   Last Sunday and this one, too, Jesus declares:  “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”  In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus’ first compassionate act is making wine for the Cana wedding feast (two Sundays ago).  His first public words focus on care for the poor, the captive, the blind, and the oppressed (last Sunday).  Gracious words!  Amazing words (this Sunday)! Luke, the Gospel of mercy, is our guide in this Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy.

What Good News do I need to hear?
What Good News can I proclaim?
What can I do to help make it come true?

IF YOU HAVE OLD PALMS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO DISCARD, PLEASE BRING THEM

WOMEN'S QUIET RETREAT AT THE KING'S HOUSE:  We welcome all ladies of the parish to attend our parish's retreat weekend, March 11-13, at the beautiful King's House in Belleville.   At Pope Francis's invitation, this year's theme "Mercy is a Bridge" will focus on the mystery and power of mercy.  For more information or to register please call Mary Elmore at 566-7315.

SOUPER BOWL OF CARING is the Weekend of February 6 and 7.  How many of us will be attending a Super Bowl party on February 7 where there will be enough food to feed 2 or 3 times the people there?  How many of us will leave church and travel home to a home that has enough heat in the winter and is cool in the summer?  14 percent of households (17.4 million households) were food insecure.  That means that families are concerned when and what their next meal will be.  There are families in Mascoutah who have difficulties paying their gas and electric bills.  On February 6 and 7, the youth group will once again be collecting money for the poor in Mascoutah.  100% of all the money raised goes to our St. Vincent de Paul Society.  In this Year of Mercy, Pope Francis says the Church’s great asset is the poor.  Can we count on you?

HCS GIFT CARD PROGRAM: Valentine's Day is coming up quickly!  Did you know that Holy Childhood School sells Hallmark gift cards, which can be used in town at Dauber Pharmacy, as well as all other Hallmark stores?  For your other Valentine's Day needs, we also stock Target, Walmart, iTunes, and many restaurants.  Please stop by the gathering space after masses for more information.

THANK YOU to everyone who attended last week's Pancake Breakfast at St. John's. We certainly enjoyed having you as our guests and hope you enjoyed the breakfast and social time. Your support is greatly appreciated. The net $1045 was supplemented by $750 in legacy funds and will be used for local charities. St. John Church (United Church of Christ).

God's Mercy

How lucky we are to feel God's forgiveness and mercy throughout our lives. As humans, we are constantly in a state of sinfulness. Yet we are granted the blessing of grace and reconciliation through Our Lord Jesus Christ if we but ask. This week our 2nd graders will also receive this gift of mercy through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Please pray for our youth as they are filled with God's love and forgiveness.

As we enter the Jubilee Year of Mercy let us remember that one of the goals is for us to recite the Chaplet of Divine Mercy daily. We say the Chaplet as part of adoration on Tuesdays at 3:15.  Often we hear, “ What is the Year of Mercy all  about?”  ‘Jesus I trust in You’ is the basic response.  Our Lord spoke to St. Faustina: “speak to the world about My mercy: let all mankind recognize My unfathomable mercy.  While there is still time, let them profit from the Blood and Water which gushed forth for them. (Diary, 8848).  “Before I come as the Just Judge, I am coming first as the King of Mercy (Diary, 83).   Trust in the Lord is what it is all about.  I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy” Diary, 687).  Join us at our Cenacle meetings the 2nd and 4th Tuesday at 1:30 at 312 N. August St. as we endeavor to greater understand the benefits of the Year of Mercy and Divine Mercy.  Every Tuesday we have adoration from after Mass until 6 PM and on Sat from 9-10.  If you would like to accept a specific hour of prayer or list someone on the Prayer Chain call 566-9529. Due to changes in the surgery, we will begin Cenacle meetings again in February on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 1:30.
