FATHER PAUL’S ONE CENT WORTH:

The Church season of Lent begins this Wednesday as we celebrate Ash Wednesday. Our parish Masses on Ash Wednesday will be at 6:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m., and 7:00 p.m. At the Ash Wednesday Masses we are signed on the forehead with ashes, made from palms we received on previous Palm Sundays, and told “Remember you are dust, and to dust you will return”. We are reminded to be humble and to change our lives for the better during Lent. During Lent we celebrate the Stations of the Cross on Fridays at 5:30 p.m. We fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, and we abstain from meat on all the Fridays of Lent. Other Lenten opportunities are mentioned elsewhere in this weekend’s bulletin, and more will be mentioned in coming weeks.

We recently received the following note from Sherry Miller of Daystar in Cairo: Dear Holy Childhood Parish Family, What a month this has been with the flooding, after all the flooding just 4 years earlier. Thank you for helping people here to gain their lives again. God bless you all. At this moment, keep us all in your prayers as part of our staff here at Daystar and Sister Mary Carolyn are down with respiratory ailments. I really hope to be up there with you all in Mass one weekend soon. Prayers and Blessings to you all from Sherry and Daystar.

Next weekend our parish will be holding a Luke 18 weekend for 7th and 8th graders from our parish and neighboring parishes. Please pray for the young people making this weekend and for the adults and high school students who have worked so hard and so long to prepare this weekend.

Next Sunday our RCIA catechumens and candidates will make the next step in their faith journey as they celebrate the Rite of Sending at the 10:30 Mass. That afternoon they will celebrate the Rite of Election with catechumens and candidates from throughout the Diocese of Belleville at the Cathedral. Please pray for them as they continue their journey toward the Easter sacraments.

Our Blood Drive on Thursday, January 28, had 56 presenting donors and 53 total units. Thank you from the American Red Cross for a great Blood Drive.

Lastly, there is an insert with this weekend’s bulletin. Before you just toss this insert aside, I plead with you that you take the time to read it. It is a letter from the priests of our Diocese to all of you, the People of God, whom we are privileged to serve. As we begin Lent in this Year of Mercy, we priests recognize that we are called by our vocation to be ministers of God’s mercy to you. We priests, however, also know that we ourselves are in need of mercy. Just as we hope to bring God’s mercy to you, we know that you bring God’s mercy to us through your acceptance of us and your understanding of our human weaknesses. Therefore, as we begin Lent in this Year of Mercy, we hope that all of us will come to know God’s great mercy through our understanding and love for each other.

Father Paul

LENTEN REGULATIONS

The season of Lent extends this year from Ash Wednesday, February 10, to the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, March 24, inclusive.

Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all Fridays of Lent.

2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is also bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. The other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but altogether they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the obligation of the law is modified. Because Lent is a special season for all Christians, we should not lightly excuse ourselves from these penitential practices.

4. To completely disregard the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful.

Year of Mercy

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time – February 6-7, 2016. Lent is almost here. Forty special Days for extraordinary fasting, praying, giving. We will fast to sharpen our senses. We will pray to focus our attention on God in Christ. We will give up some things and give away more things, in order to give ourselves over to a Christian life of compassion and mercy.

CRS Rice Bowls

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) has given our students the annual Rice Bowl for Lenten use. As we focus on the Year of Mercy, and helping those less unfortunate, the alms showing our Lenten sacrifices will greatly aid those less fortunate through the Corporal Works of Mercy.

FEB 14        NO CLASS     PRESIDENT'S DAY

As we enter the Jubilee Year of Mercy let us remember that one of the goals is for us to recite the Chaplet of Divine Mercy daily. We say the Chaplet as part of adoration on Tuesdays at 3:15.  Often we hear, “ What is the Year of Mercy all  about?”  ‘Jesus I trust in You’ is the basic response.  Our Lord spoke to St. Faustina: “speak to the world about My mercy: let all mankind recognize My unfathomable mercy.  While there is still time, let them profit from the Blood and Water which gushed forth for them. (Diary, 8848).  “Before I come as the Just Judge, I am coming first as the King of Mercy (Diary, 83).   Trust in the Lord is what it is all about.  I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy” Diary, 687).  Join us at our Cenacle meetings the 2nd and 4th Tuesday at 1:30 at 312 N. August St. as we endeavor to greater understand the benefits of the Year of Mercy and Divine Mercy.  Every Tuesday we have adoration from after Mass until 6 PM and on Sat from 9-10.  If you would like to accept a specific hour of prayer or list someone on the Prayer Chain call 566-9529. Due to changes in the surgery, we will begin Cenacle meetings again in February on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 1:30.
